Communication skills is divided into 2 parts:
(i) Verbal Communication
(ii) Non-verbal Communication
LET’S SHARE booklet is a very resourceful one with useful tips and strategies for teaching communication skills to students. However, it can be noticed that the booklet is mostly concentrated on verbal communication.
Strategies adopted by teachers will allow students to write and speak properly but along with proper oral skills it is very important to acquaint students with non verbal communication such as facial expressions, eyes, touching, and tone of voice, as well as less obvious messages such as dressing, posture and spatial distance between two or more people.
Teaching nonverbal communication
Relatively few techniques have been suggested for teaching nonverbal communication, but some suggestions are:
• Students discuss the meaning of gestures and expressions which is demonstrated by the teacher, from pictures, or from existing published materials.
• Students watch a video clip without sound, discuss body language, relationships, emotions and feelings, then write the dialogue.
• Students act out a dialogue using gesture and expression only.
• Students make up a dialogue based on mimic.
• Students, in pairs, take turns in listening to each other for 30 seconds, using only nonverbal responses.
Importance of Non Verbal communication
A “majority” of the meaning we attribute to words comes not from the words themselves, but from nonverbal factors such as gestures, facial expressions, tone, body language, etc.
Nonverbal cues can play favorable roles like:
1. They can repeat the message the person is making verbally
2. They can substitute for a verbal message. For example, a person’s eyes can often convey a far more vivid message than words and often do
3. They may add to or complement a verbal message. A teacher who pats a student on the back in addition to giving praise can increase the impact of the messag
4. Non-verbal communication may accept or underline a verbal message. Pounding the table, for example, can underline a message.
Skillful communicators understand the importance of nonverbal communication and use it to increase their effectiveness, as well as use it to understand more clearly what someone else is really saying.

Sir, how does electricity come to my house?
First, electricity is produced in a power station. It then travels through cables, supported by poles, to our houses.
But what is that box that is found outside the house?
That box is called the supplier’s meter. It counts how much energy you have used in a month. Have you noted a meter reader that comes to your house to read the value on the meter and deliver your electricity bill?
Yes. Can we open the box to see what is inside?
Now do not say box, you should say:
Supplier’s meter.
Never do that. It is very dangerous!
But Sir, there is another box found inside the house!
That box is called the consumer-unit or the distribution box. It contains all the protective devices.
Can you name some of these protective devices?

Let me explain about the function of a circuit breaker. It is a device that trips off automatically when there is excess current in a circuit in the house. Let us write these words.
What is a fuse, then?
A fuse is a device that blows out where there is an excess current and has to be replaced by another one.

5.3 JESSICA’S DREAM
It was a cold rainy night. Jessica was fast asleep. She dreamt that she was a famous fashion designer and that she designed garments for the Hollywood actresses.
She dreamt that she had a huge workshop which was occupied by thousands of sewing machines. She had hundreds of scissors, needles, thimbles and lengths of expensive and luxurious fabrics, all properly arranged.
In the workshop, the employees were busy cutting beautiful plain and printed fabrics while others were stitching the garments that Jessica had designed.
One dress had to be made ready for a famous Hollywood actress. It was beautifully designed with laces, ribbons, buttons and embroidery stitches. On the wrong side the dress was neatly finished with expensive lining material. As soon as the dress was ready, it was pressed and packed in a big white box and sent to the actress’s residence.
The actress was so amazed and happy on seeing the beautiful dress that she invited Jessica to join her for a party.
On the day of party, Jessica wore a beautiful red blouse and a long black pleated skirt. There, she saw many actors and actresses. Jessica looked out for the actress and finally saw her in the crowd. As she made her way towards the actress, she slipped and fell.
Jessica woke up in a jerk and realized that it was just a dream!
